It was in November 1999, while in rehab for a major knee injury, that a Fly Fishing episode appeared on TV called The Coach and the Cowboy starring Curt Gowdy and Coach Bobby Knight. The two were Fly fishing the Green River for trout.
The love of fishing and the respect they had for each other permeated thru out the episode.
It reminded me of all the times I spent Fly Fishing on streams in the upper Greenville County with my 3 sons, David Jr., Jeremy, and Justin. On school days, occasionally, we would arrive before daylight and try to limit out and return to prep for school.
As a teacher on these trips, I made sure they knew the art of the cast. I spent more time smiling as they mastered a roll cast with perfection and seeing their smiles when they knew they nailed the cast.
Oh, those little things make this 80-year-old ex-sportsman smile again today. Precious Memories now begin as I penned a letter of appreciation to Coach Knight at Indiana University.
Today, though, makes me smile again as knowing that both Curt Gowdy and Coach Bobby Knight have passed on and brings the last sentence to a poem I wrote in 1999 back to life.
Author glad to know for posterity that this memory will carry on.
