A good pair of sunglasses is a requirement for fly fishermen. Whether you are wading a mountain stream, poling the salt flats, or catching fish on the nearest pond or lake, sunglasses are an essential and valuable piece of fishing gear.
I recently purchased a pair of Guides Choice Bifocals from Smith Optics. Anytime I order something new, I feel anxious. I realize that I am rough on equipment, and as frequently as I fish, I need sunglasses that will be rugged, withstand mild abuse, and be effective and fit. I was not disappointed with these sunglasses.
With age comes sight requirements that include readers, cheaters, and bifocals. Bifocals are a must on my fishing sunglasses. As with many bifocals, the magnification area must be in the correct location on the lens. When not, this vision issue can lead to falling over rocks, making a wrong step off a boat deck, and other missteps. This is purely experience speaking here. Smith Optics placed these magnifiers where they were easy to use but didn’t interfere with normal vision.
These particular sunglasses were light on my nose and comfortable to wear. After spending 8-9 hours on the water last week, the lens color seemed to relax my eyes, and they were not itchy or red at the end of the day. The lens color broke the mirrored glare on the water, allowing me to spot fish easily and see where I was wading.
These glasses checked all the boxes, including fit, quality, and functionality. I will order a backup pair so I won’t be without them.
